Life Members

Noosa Boardriders Club “Life Membership” is an important recognition of service to our club.  It is these members who through outstanding commitment and tireless work ethic have truly laid the foundations of our club. They are responsible for the cultural ethos as a guiding light for generations of members to come. It is their creed that our heritage is brought forward to sit and mix with the fresh new ideas of our contemporary club. They set the standard on good sportsmanship, building our teamwork, character, and teaching respect, honour, discipline, inclusion and more. When our kids hit the water they enjoy active play, they look forward to our sport and exercise as a chance to make new friends and develop new skills. This is the regeneration of Noosa Boardriders Club that our “Life Members” can be duly proud of.

Nick J Wallace

World Junior Champion 1994 Nick Joined the club in 1989 as frothing grommet and quickly rose to the top with his power and air game. He was destined for great things and won the world Junior title in 1994, a professional surfing career on the world stage followed. Its champions like Nick that have built the cultural foundations of our club with his own inimitable style and class.

In Nick's words. "I Joined the club late 80s as a cadet.. (9yrs of age) NBC was the foundation of my professional surfing career having a really solid cadet Jnr and open team that I looked up too guys such as Tyson Keogh, China, Shorty, Darren Magee, Shannon Neil, Dean Cole, Tim Mitchell, Ryan Grey, Hayden Byrne, Ryan Watson, Dwayne Peanga, Israel Kani, these guys shaped my surfing and set me up to compete again many of the worlds best.

This club will always have a special place in my heart and always thankful to Chucky the President and the elders that brought so much fun and froth to the club. I was super proud to win the Straddie Assault Teams event with Club Captain Shannon Neil for the club and was always so stoked to represent Noosa Boardriders Club at Newcastle and Kirra teams titles many times!!

I’m sooo excited to see the talent in the club these days it’s amazing to see how many kids from our club are going places internationally and I know it’s without doubt, one of the best clubs in Australia. It really shows that kids from Noosa have it as good as anywhere in the world and if they want it enough they have all the foundations in the club to set the pathway for a career in surfing. At the same time the club is sooo good for the average punter to keep busy and be a part of the surf community and culture that is NBC..."

David ‘Chucky’ Cervi

With a lot of clubs there seems to be one individual who embodies the club spirit, who is there with a big heart, a steady hand, making plenty of noise when needed. You don’t want to be standing next to Chucky when our teams are in the water and its down to the final wave, he'll blow you away! His commitment to his club is only rivalled by his commitment to his family, so it's easy to see why he is so proud of and loves his club.

In chucks own words:  "I joined the club in 1982 joined the committee and then was appointed contest director until 2014. In that time I didn’t miss a Kirra team’s or Straddle Assault and Quicky Surf League and then turned into Jim Beam surf league.  Highlights, winning the Kirra teams in 98, low lights loosing Ryan Watson and Greg Barber great team members.

Was a big part of my whole families lives and seeing our son Thomas travelling the world doing the QS and that would not have been possible without the club system we have in Australia.  It brings the community together as a non-profit organisation its the love of the sport that is dear to my heart. The future is bright with over 100 plus juniors and the Shotgun Shootouts event which keeps everyone very keen and the National teams event next year in Newcastle which we qualified for.

My dream will be when Noosa will have somebody on the Pro Tour, Men or Women’s. Noosa is the best place in the world to live and the best club in the world!

As a footnote: Chucks 3 boys are all accomplished shredders and active Noosa Boardriders club members. James and Hayden, respected Noosa Shire lifesavers and Thomas closing in on the top 100 on the 2019 WQS world tour. 2020 could well be the year Chucky's dream comes true!

Mark Fielding

Mark Fielding our quiet unassuming president with a ferocious love of our club and its members. Mark joined Noosa Boardriders Club in 1992, “ around that time I’d just moved up from Sydney and opened up my furniture manufacturing business. Busy time “stuck in my box” factory meant not a lot of social life a guy up the road from me Denis Collins the then President and Peter Court Secretary both whom I would see in the surf suggested I join the club. So I came down signed up and loved just being on the beach getting in on the contests and hanging out with like minded people with the same passion. I guess the highlight was the weekend we won the Kirra Teams. It’s a full page classic surf story that one day I’ll find some time and write it up. Too funny, totally etched in my mind.

Other major achievements for me, as a club member and Secretary/Treasurer was bringing the club from a very poor equipment base, ie: blue plastic sheet for a tent and a loud hailer, to designing a tent made from vinyl that had flip up sides to create heaps of shade, a Trailer for gear all which would display our new Local Sponsors. Microphone and generator, Tables, Chairs.

As Treasurer and Secretary for 9 years, us, the committee, organised our first trip to a national event at Cronulla, accommodation with comfort at State events boosted by government gaming funding, local sponsors and our own raffles. President for 4 years was another milestone for me. Timing wasn’t great as open club members grew onto to other things and juniors were just too young, but a change wasn’t far away and we held the club together Emma Bryant, Chucky and I as we knew this was a restructuring period and time would heal.

NBC has given me and I’m sure I speak for every past and present member an honest and sincere friendship amongst each other in and out of the water. It’s a humble family of folk that are together for, themselves, their children and a great social belonging which has a solid history and will have a fortunate future surfing in Noosa with the current committee and its members.

Noosa wouldn’t be the place it is, if it wasn’t for Surfing.

Peter Troy

Peter Troy 1938-2008, OAM-Medal of the order of Australia - 2007, Member of the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame - 2002 , Honorary Historian for Surfing Australia, World Traveller and mentor to many.

Much has been said about our first Noosa Boardriders Club president elected in 1968, from the best surfer in Victoria in his day, creating the Bells Beach Competition with Vic Tantau, co-discovering Nias, to the person responsible for kick starting surfing Brazil.

However, it was Peter with a group of dedicated surfers that created the Noosa Surfriders Club now known as the Noosa Boardriders Club in 1968-1969. Whilst early on his heart may well have been in Torquay or roaming around the globe he eventually made his home in Noosa with his parents when they built Palm Tree Lodge on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville in 1968 but with his Dad dying in Feb 1969 he sold the Motel in 1971. He continued to live on the coast close to his mother who ended up living in Buderim. Initially Noosa in 1967, then Sunshine Beach, Coolum and making his way to Mudjimba Beach in close view of his beloved Mudjimba Island.

Peter’s background as an accountant with a meticulous attention to detail stood the club in good stead with records dating back to those first club days still with us today. He was an organiser, a doer someone who loved a challenge. As clubs often do our club had ground to a stop in around 1979-1980. Through chance meetings with club members Peter and his then partner in Kevin Platt surfboards David Harpo” Hutchison sowed the seed to put the club back on a firm footing for the future. At the time it was their determination and guidance that led to the club pushing forward with a new committee and over 120 members.

It’s fair to say Peter loved Noosa, the Sunshine Coast and the people close to him. Peter was always up for the next challenge. In the mid 80’s he took a co-share in a lease on Mudjimba Island with David Allen the then developer of the First Point units. At the time he felt that he needed to protect the Island against commercial interests. Eventually Peter took over as the sole lease holder living on the island on weekends, he never really gave up that sense of adventure. Peter took up a position as night auditor of the Surfair Hotel on Marcoola Beach adjacent to the Island. On weekends he would paddle his surf ski across the channel in the afternoons or later in the pitch black to start his night shift at 10pm and work through till 6am paddling back to the island at daybreak, still pushing the limits. At times he recounted being surrounded by swarms of bluebottles and sharks, never a dull moment.

It’s this sense of challenge, love of family and community tied together by the ocean and surfing that Peter leaves as a legacy for our club.

Graham Endersby

"Eggy" as Graham is affectionately known joined the Noosa Boardriders club in 1982 and competed every year until 2012. He has continued to volunteer year on year and continues today.

In his own words : " I've always wanted to help every generation be the best surfers and people they could be and love seeing the club be successful year in year out ... once I was the only high performance coach in Noosa now kids that I've coached are becoming successful coaches in their own right which is super edifying .... the club's future is in great hands from administrators, volunteers to judging on computers and really supportive sponsors ...we've always produced State and  National level surfers including Pro Juniors and WQS  combatants but we've never been better situated to support and produce even more ...so exciting times!"

Eggy also fronted the "Diatonix" a local cult band based in Noosa playing to feverish audiences throughout the 80's. Eggy has always given, be it joy through his music or his training and mentoring of all our members. Suffice to say Eggy has his own style of soul.
